Disseminação em vídeos virais: remixagem, significação, transmissão e outros aspectos
Published in proceedings of XXI Congresso da SIBE, Lisboa, 2010
A video of the singer Vanusa performing the Brazilian National Anthem at a ceremony of the São Paulo Legislative Assembly was posted on YouTube in mid-August 2009. Shortly thereafter, the video spread rapidly across the internet, appearing on hundreds of websites and other online information sources. The result was a complex network of activity and debate all over Brazil involving hundreds of other videos that may be considered copies, remixes, appropriations, parodies and references to the original clip. Videos diffused in this manner have often been called “viral”. This paper uses the case of Vanusa's National Anthem clip to discuss what many refer to as the viral video phenomenon. With statistics and data supplied by YouTube, as well as comments posted on the site and issues related to analogous videos, it also examines some characteristics of creative processes and transmission in the context of the internet.
published in 'IV Congress of CyberSociety 2009'.
This paper identifies and mirrors theoretical issues underlying an ethnomusicology in cyberspace. Ethnomusicological production is basic for this study, though not its only concern. A theoretical delimitation will be needed within ethnomusicological studies that relate music, technoculture and cyberspace (MTC). These latter two concepts are defined for this purpose. A brief historical background will show important relations both music, in general, and ethnomusicology, from the outset, have had with technology and, therefore, with technoculture. Extratextuality, virtuality and materiality are stressed here as significant in the studies reviewed. Those issues relate to fundamental aspects of musical practices in cyberspace such as creation, sharing, enjoyment and commodification.
Práticas musicais em comunidades virtuais: etnomusicologia do ciberespaço?
Salamanca, Espanha, 2008.
This work addresses aspects of musical practices virtual communities developed since 2005, following the boom of Web 2.0. The concepts of "musical practices" and "virtual communities" are set to a brief preliminary definition to be followed by theoretical views collected from sociology, anthropology and ethnomusicology, as well as from research networks such as eMule, Youtube, Myspace and Second Life. After considering music and entertainment, convergence of media, hyper-interaction, recombination and re-use of audiovisual material and reformulation of the concept of intellectual property, this paper attempts to answer the following question: Can one be talking already of an "ethnomusicology of cyberspace" as an area of research?
This paper discusses music made by less favored social classes in 19th century Bahia. In order to relate musical practices to its context, at that time and place, a comparative analysis of diverse bibliographical sources is undertaken: literature of travelers, historical and analytical approaches to the urban context, social analyses, music histories, newspaper accounts, musical collections of cantigas, modinhas and lundus, 19th century chronicles or other history reconstructions, and additional articles that treat the subject in a variety of aspects. For this, two levels are identified: of musical practice and circulation, and of social and cultural contexts. These levels will be useful to observe the different parameters involved (politic, economic, social, etc.) and how they ruled the society of that period.
Published in Ictus, nº 7, pp. 151-162, 2006
Xisto Bahia: ilustre e desconhecido
